We are devoted to promoting an inclusive culture that embraces and nurtures our patients, colleagues, partners, physicians and communities. We continue to deliver on this promise through the following accomplishments of our diversity and inclusion efforts:
Chief Diversity Officer, Sherri Neal, leads a team responsible for advancing diversity, inclusion, equity and cultural competence initiatives across HCA Healthcare. Our program encompasses patients, colleagues, suppliers, boards and community partnerships.
We established an Executive Diversity and Inclusion Council, led by CEO Sam Hazen, whose members meet quarterly to inform critical strategic decision making, monitor progress against goals and objectives, and serve as visible and vocal sponsors of diversity, equity and inclusion efforts across the organization.
Across HCA Healthcare, our Division Diversity, Equity and Inclusion councils support deployment of key DEI strategies and programs. These councils are comprised of division leaders and facility representatives who reflect the diversity of the communities we serve.
The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion team has developed multiple award-winning models, including: the Cultural Inclusion Series, the Culturally Competent Care Resource Guide, and the Cultural Insights Project. Our BRAVE Conversations program is an ‘outside the box’ platform designed to facilitate interactive, inclusive, innovative and safe ways for our employees to share their thoughts on issues that may be difficult to discuss. The program won the “2018 Innovations in Diversity Award” by the Profiles in Diversity Journal. Most recently, the team developed a conscious inclusion training experience to equip leaders to recognize and mitigate different types of unconscious biases and prepare them with practical day-today skills and resources to engage and support our colleagues. The live, virtually facilitated conscious inclusion training experience was recognized with an Award of Excellence from Profiles in Diversity Journal’s Innovations in Diversity Awards in 2020.
Take a look at the progress made in 2020 and 2021 towards our diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) commitments and additional accomplishments.
At HCA Healthcare, we strive to foster a diverse and inclusive environment where all colleagues can thrive. Our colleague networks are employee-led, self-directed voluntary networks that strengthen our culture of diversity & inclusion by facilitating connection, collaboration, and celebration among colleagues. Colleague Networks are spaces for colleagues to share ideas and solutions, build relationships, and unlock possibilities for career development, mentorship, and engagement in the communities we serve.
In recognition of Black History Month, HCA Healthcare is celebrating the impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) on our colleagues and communities.
In 2019, the HCA Healthcare Scholars at Fisk University program was created to provide scholarships, career planning support and internship opportunities for high-achieving undergraduates. One of those recipients was Jillian Allen, an implementation specialist with HCA Healthcare’s clinical operations group, who notes the decision to attend Fisk University ultimately was divinely orchestrated.
“HBCU alum walk differently, talk differently, and definitely move differently in making outstanding impacts throughout this world in countless ways.” - Jillian Allen, Implementation Specialist, HCA Healthcare’s Clinical Operations Group
Our diversity and inclusion strategy, based on internal and external research, helps us advance people of color and women into leadership roles. We are proud that people of color currently comprise nearly 45% of our workforce and women comprise nearly 80%.
