Workplace Culture and Benefits

Healthcare Inspired: what it means to IT&S

IT&S is home to IT professionals who could apply their technical skills to anything from luggage management to tire manufacturing to vacation planning, but they choose to employ their skills where they’re part of a larger good and contributing to the noble cause of transforming healthcare through technology. That's what it means to be healthcare inspired. As an organization of healthcare inspired individuals we:

Healthcare will be inspired by our technology solutions. Our solutions will be inspired by our uniquely talented team of experts. And we should all be inspired by the meaningful work we do.

Technology Accomplishments

Cancer Focus

Perhaps one of HCA's most significant accomplishments in technology and greatest contributions to healthcare is through the Sarah Cannon Cancer Navigation program. The Cancer Navigation program is a custom development project created by teams of technology professionals and cancer clinical research experts located in Nashville. The Cancer Navigation software connects patients with a nurse, from the time of a suspicious finding all the way through survivorship. This tool strengthens the oncology care delivery process and ultimately provides a single point of contact to patients. For the patient just diagnosed with cancer, the personal connections this technology enables goes beyond significant – they become critical in helping the cancer patient understand what lies ahead in their cancer-fighting journey.

Clinical Focus

Clinical data warehouse/EHR

IT&S has built the largest clinical data management system in the healthcare industry. This impressive system centralizes clinical data for all HCA facilities and is the backbone behind HCA’s integrated electronic health record. Through foundational technology like a clinical data warehouse and integrated clinical information systems, HCA facilities are an integrated healthcare system both locally and nationwide. No other healthcare system has this capability today or can make that claim on such a grand scale as HCA. Establishing and building relationships with leading vendors contributed to this important accomplishment for the company, and IT&S employees are members of Microsoft’s technical advisory board and are viewed as technical evangelists for the Southeast on topics related to clinical informatics and enterprise clinical integration.

Leading the Way in Tennessee

Not only has HCA implemented an integrated EHR and foundational clinical data warehouse, but HCA is also using telemedicine technologies such as wireless devices for device tracking and video technology for virtual clinical consulting, all with the mission to improve patient care. To that end, six Nashville hospitals provide timely intervention following a stroke by using a remote presence solution that allows neurologists at the hospital to consult – virtually – any time with a network of stroke centers and specialists. Telemedicine technology also helps provide access to a variety of mental health professionals, including Davidson County judges at Middle Tennessee Mental Health Institution (MTMHI), when needed for behavioral health assessment and treatment.

  • Know technology improves the patient experience
  • Believe clinicians care for people better when armed with the right technology
  • Provide tools caregivers need to do their best work
  • See that technology applied to healthcare is meaningful. It matters.
