The Nurse Extern delivers high quality, patient-centered care by performing a variety of delegated basic patient care services related to common nursing functions and activities of daily living. Under the supervision of the registered nurse (RN), the Nurse Extern assists the nursing staff in providing patient care in accordance with the Nurse Extern’s skills/training and the needs of the Department, and consistently assists the patient care team with maintaining a clean, well-organized, and safe patient care environment. The Nurse Extern is currently enrolled and in good standing in an accredited school of nursing and can perform higher-level procedures once competency is achieved.   

Units Accepting Nurse Externs:

• Med/Surg, Tele/Neuro, Oncology, Orthopedics, Float Pool
• ICU, PCU, ED (limited availability)
• ED, Women’s Services, Surgical Services (limited availability)

Requirements:

• Completion of Fundamental of Nursing Course/first semester
• Enrolled and in good standing with nursing program
• BLS
• Self-motivated and strong communication skills required

HCA Florida Lake Monroe Hospital, a 221-bed acute care hospital and Level II Trauma Center, serves the communities of Seminole and west Volusia counties. The hospital provides the only full-service cardiovascular program in Seminole and west Volusia, including open heart surgery, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, cardiac rehabilitation and comprehensive diagnostic services. Other specialized services include orthopedic and spine care, robotic surgery, acute inpatient medical rehabilitation and complete imaging services. HCA Florida Lake Monroe Hospital is located 3.6 miles east of I-4 between S.R. 46 and Highway 17-92 in Sanford. The hospital provides 24/7 emergency care at its main location as well as at Heathrow ER located at 4525 International Parkway in Sanford.
