The Coding Lead performs as the daily contact for outpatient coding operations.  Including ICD-10 CM and CPT code validation for all outpatient patient types, resolution of billing edits, operational, and general questions from the coding staff, Health Information Management Service Center (HSC) staff, and shared service center departments. The Coding Lead provides support to coding leadership by coordinating coding, education, and revenue cycle activities within the HSC. The Coding Lead works to achieve and maintain overall company-defined department goals. The Coding Lead works to ensure compliance with national coding guidelines, HSC coding policies, and Company coding policies. The Coding Lead verifies complete, accurate, and consistent coding validation resulting in appropriate reimbursement, data integrity, and minimal variation in coding practices.

  • You will lead, coordinate, and perform HSC coding quality reviews for outpatient coding. The reviews can be routine, policy driven, performance driven, incentive plan driven, customer needs, identified trends, RAC, payer, among others as needed. Review scope will include outpatient coding, ER E/M Charge and query validation
  • You will lead, coordinate and perform edit resolution for all outpatient coding edits
  • You will provide timely feedback and education as it relates to issues or trends found during the review of accounts to coding staff and report to Coding Manager on this activity
  • You will monitor work queues and allocate resources, including staff, appropriately
  • You will occasionally provide back up for coding staff due to absences and business needs
  • You will perform outpatient code assignment and initiate physician queries where appropriate
  • You will ensure rebill requests are entered timely through the system and process outlined in company and HSC policy
  • You will answer coding related questions and assist any coding staff with day-to-day operations, timely and appropriately
  • You will assist the Coding Manager in verifying and reporting staff productivity
  • You will assure accounts that cannot be coded are held for valid reasons and documented accurately utilizing Unbilled Reason Codes (URCs)


• High school graduate or GED required
• Associate's degree or higher in HIM/HIT strongly preferred
• Extensive regulatory coding (ICD-10-CM, CPT/HCPCS) and associated reimbursement knowledge required
• Management and supervisory experience in healthcare-related field preferred
• Minimum of 5
years of acute care outpatient coding experience required
• Minimum of 3 years coding auditing experience strongly preferred
• RHIA, RHIT, or CCS required
