Job Summary and Qualifications

Jump start your nursing career at St. David’s Healthcare by joining our Specialty Training Apprenticeship for Registered Nurses (StaRN).

Cohort Start dates: January, February and March 2023

These Inpatient Rehab RN Residency positions are available at the following hospitals:

  • St. David's Medical Center
  • St. David's Georgetown Hospital

The StaRN Program includes a combination of didactic training, simulation, and clinical preceptorship. As a new RN in our StaRN Program, you will receive the education and support necessary to move with confidence from the classroom to the bedside to become the highest caliber nurse.

The year-long StaRN program starts with a 10 to 22 week training agenda (depending on specialty):

Didactic Training: First 5 to 9 weeks (depending on specialty)

  • Instructor-led classroom training
  • State-of-the-art simulation including comprehensive debriefs
  • Certifications needed for each unit
  • Training on charting systems
  • The schedule is typically Monday-Friday, with 40-hour work weeks (8-hour days)

Clinical Preceptorship: Next 7-14 weeks (depending on specialty)

  • Conducted at the hospital
  • You will be assigned a one-on-one preceptor to train you and acclimate you to your role
  • Regular development meetings between the resident, their preceptor and their Director
  • Customized Coaching/Onboarding report for clinical preceptorship
  • The schedule is typically three (3) 12 hour shifts at the hospital

Residency Program – Remainder of your 1st year. Upon successful completion of the StaRN Program, residents will transition to their full-time roles at the hospital and continue professional development through routine interactions with a mentor

What qualifications will you need:

  • Associate’s Degree in Nursing – required, Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree – preferred
  • Must have a current Texas RN License prior to your first day of employment OR have a current Graduate Nurse permit. If joining SDH on a Graduate Nurse Permit, you will be required to schedule and pass your NCLEX within your first 30 days of employment.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification from American Red Cross or American Heart Association – required

Nursing skills include: IVs, PICC/Central Lines, Trachs, Ports, LVADs, Wound/Ostomy Care, NG/PEG/JG Tubes, Blood Administration, Cardiac Medications, etc.
