Medical Technologist Lead

Position Summary:
To supervise and monitor the daily activities in the section assigned and ensure that all requests for laboratory testing are accomplished in a timely and accurate manner consistent with departmental policies and procedures.  Ensures that all equipment and procedures are functioning properly to provide an acceptable level of service.  To have the ability to evaluate the quality of results rendered to physicians and institute corrective actions if results do not meet established criteria.  Ensures that all procedures and manuals are current, and conform to accreditation standards.  Performs bench work meeting the same guidelines and expectations as other Medical Technologists.  Performs other reasonable and related duties as assigned.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:  
Model and ensure the "I AM HCA" behavioral standards are followed.
Participates in hospital or departmental performance improvement activities.
Perform special assignments as needed/requested.
Serves as a clinical resource to department staff, students, volunteers and other departments, and contributes to the teamwork essential to ensuring quality patient care.
Takes appropriate measures to ensure safety of patients.
Attend staff meetings and in-services.
Transport patients safely.
Provide care of patients with a variety of medical diagnosis and resulting complications.
Participates in hospital or departmental performance improvement activities.
Reviews results of all work performed in their area on a daily basis.
Maintains proficiency in all areas of the laboratory.
Ensures testing is performed in accordance to meet the individual needs of newborns to geriatric patients
Responds effectively to STAT requests as well as follows established procedure for critical value reporting.
Provides technical knowledge and expertise for procedural and instrument problem solving.
Writes, maintains, revises and reviews procedure manuals as necessary.
Establishes and maintains quality control programs and Quality Assurance Programs.
Performs and documents all quality control as specified in a complete and timely manner.
Properly documents all remedial action taken.
Determines equipment and instrument maintenance and writes procedures for their performance.
Follows proper procedure for infection control.
Is familiar with send out procedure, specimen requirements and communications with reference lab.
Processes patients and specimens in the reception area.
Maintains proper supply inventory.


Current registration as a MT (ASCP), MLS (ASCP), MT (AMT), or equivalent is mandatory.
Appropriate specialty certification is desirable, but not mandatory.
Bachelor’s Degree with a strong course background in chemistry and biology or military service equivalent.
A minimum of four years clinical laboratory experience per CAP requirements.
Minimum of one (1) year relevant experience in the area of assignment.
Minimum of one year supervisor experience preferred.
Special Qualifications: 
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Computer and keyboarding skills. 
Ability to work with others to ensure quality patient care.
Strong problem solving skills.
Continuous focus on excellence in work environment.
Appropriate specialty certification is desirable, but not mandatory.
Ability to work under stress and cope with problems arising from all phases of patient care.
Ability to exercise independent judgment in solving complex problems and accept responsibility for such decisions, with a minimum of supervision.
Job requires ability to work all shifts and weekends as required.
Ability to operate various instruments.
Can follow written instruction.
Ability to perform procedures according to established standards of operation.
