Job Summary of the Special Procedures Technologist

The Special Procedures Technologist is responsible for operating the imaging equipment and producing radiographs according to the standards and practices set forth by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. The Special Procedures Technologist assists the radiologist or physician to perform interventional procedures. The Special Procedures Technologist demonstrates knowledge of the human structure and functions, patient care, positioning, principles of radiographic sciences, radiation protection and specialized techniques unique to the Special Procedures environment. Exercises professional judgment in performance of services and maintains a demeanor complementary of medical ethics.

Participates in providing patient specific care standards as directed, and follows service excellence standards to ensure high levels of patient satisfaction.

Responsibilities of the Special Procedures Technologist

  • Consistently produce films of optimal diagnostic quality on patients ranging from adolescent to geriatric.
  • Follow established routine Special Procedures protocols.
  • Operate the fluoroscopy and digital equipment efficiently and effectively, demonstrate the ability to trouble-shoot equipment failures.
  • Anticipate and respond to the needs of the physician, nurse, and scrub tech during the procedure.
  • Show the ability to produce optimal quality studies for interpretation with the digital equipment.
  • Demonstrate competency and safe, effective working knowledge of Special Procedures equipment.
  • Performs other assigned duties to ensure optimal department function.
Qualifications of the Special Procedures Technologist

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Required: Graduate of an educational program in radiology accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or graduate of an American Medical Association approved program in Radiologic Technology or a military training program of equivalent standards.
  • Preferred: Associates Degree or higher in Radiologic Technology. One year as a previous experience as a Rad Tech.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:

  • Licensed Medical Radiologic Technologist (MRT) with the Texas Medical Board
  • Registered technologist with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) primary certification in Radiography - (R). If hired prior to 4/13/2012 and the technologist has been performing x-rays since 1987 and was grandfathered in by the State of Texas, only MRT or CMRT license required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification as per SDH policy.
  • Post primary certification in Cardiovascular-Intervention Technology preferred.
