A Clerical Medical Laboratory Assistant is responsible for maintaining the Pathology Laboratory records, receiving and accessioning specimens, preparing specimens for gross dissection, and laboratory maintenance.


About this unit:

  • Working in the Laboratory at Research Medical Center provides complex work and the opportunity to see and learn from everything that occurs in a Trauma 1 Hospital.

  • Receive and verify patient information on all paperwork and specimen containers for accuracy.
  • Accurately accessions all cases into the appropriate Laboratory Information Systems, prints bar-coded tissue cassettes, updates and edits histology trim sheet in Laboratory Information Systems, prepares specimens for send-out testing.
  • Maintains slid filling, prepares tumor conferences, maintains laboratory records, maintains pathology equipment and logs, maintains frozen section stain line, performs weekly tissue disposal and answers departmental telephone.
  • Maintains reports, send-out documentation and legal documentation.
  • Order, receipt, storage and inventory of supplies and reagents.
  • Label chemical waste barrels and appropriately discard chemical waste in accordance with all local, state and federal guidelines.
  • Participate in Quality Assurance (QA) reviews.
  • Assists with Laboratory accreditation inspection preparations.
  • Must observe and follow all rules, requirements and regulations.


What Qualifications You Will Need:

  • Basic knowledge of anatomy, medical terminology and math
  • Must safely handle chemicals and biohazardous materials and understand and apply information from Safety Data Sheets
  • Must effectively problem solve and adapt to new situations
  • Must work independently or in groups
  • Must communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of at least 30 semester hours college-level science coursework including biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, or medical laboratory technology preferred
  • Laboratory work experience preferred
