Director of Patient Safety – Risk Management

HCA Houston Healthcare Medical Center is a 444-bed acute care hospital in the heart of Houston’s museum district.  Established in 1975, the hospital has been serving Houston for more than 40 years. It provides a wide range of medical services, including cardiology, bariatrics, orthopedics, neurology, emergency care and more.

The hospital is affiliated with HCA Houston Healthcare, part of the HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division. The division is a comprehensive network of hospitals, outpatient surgery centers, emergency centers and diagnostic imaging facilities in greater Houston, Corpus Christi and South Texas. Facilities include: 17 hospitals, nine ambulatory care centers, 13 off-campus emergency centers, and a regional transfer center. 

What you will do in this role:

The Director of Patient Safety's (PSD) goal is to advance the HCA Houston Healthcare and Gulf Coast Division (GCD) Patient Safety and Risk Program through the promotion of a culture of safety and implementation of strategies for the elimination of avoidable patient harm. These efforts include the standardization of demonstrated safety practices and the sharing of patient harm events for transparency and proactive risk assessments across the GCD enterprise. 

  • Improve consistent delivery of evidence-based care and reduction in preventable harm by focusing on reliability and applying the principles of reliable design.
  • Reduce variation in care delivery. Partner with the Patient Safety Organization to explore identified variations when appropriate.
  • Effectively report, investigate, and analyze patient safety incidents, medical errors and potential risks in the facility.
  • Provide ongoing education to leaders, clinicians and staff on the science of safety. 

Qualifications

What qualification you will need:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare related field required, Master’s Degree preferred   
  • 3 years’ experience in a position dedicated to either Patient Safety, Risk, or Quality clinical education experience responsible for the development, implementation and delivery of clinical education programs required
  • Previous management experience preferred
  • Certification in Patient Safety (CPPS) - if not already CPPS, must complete the following:
    • CPPS Certification must be achieved within 12 months from date of hire
  • Knowledge of patient safety science principles, theory, methods, standards and regulatory requirements
  • Strong leadership qualities (task completion, motivation, organization)
  • Knowledge of and experience with patient safety analysis techniques (methods), including root cause analysis, cause and effect analysis, and failure mode and effect analysis
