The duties and responsibilities of the Respiratory Therapy Supervisor include, but are not limited to:

Assists with planning, coordination and supervision of the technical staff during the scheduled shift. Documents when necessary, any variations that occur from established policy and procedure.               

  • Performs patient care services as needed to meet departmental needs.
  • Acts as consultant for patient care concerns from staff, nursing and physicians.   
  • Supervises and participates in the process of new employee orientation.   
  • Demonstrates understanding of the operation and maintenance of the blood gas machines by solving moderate to complex operational problems.
  • Participates in staff level employee appraisal process.              
  • Assists with departmental CQI program, Outcomes management projects and other hospital initiatives as directed by 
  • Assists in ongoing staff in-service program.
  • Takes call, providing technical support for respiratory staff, emergency staff coverage and problem solving.
  • Enters all patient contacts into Meditech.  Acts as resource for Staff for Meditech and EMAR Issues.
  • Initiates and documents patient teaching including family and/or significant others.  Uses appropriate patient education documentation modality.

  • High School Graduate and Graduate of Registered Respiratory Therapy Program (RRT) (required)


  • Current Virginia Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner (required)
  • Maintain NBRC credentials for  Registered Respiratory Therapist (required)
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers  (required)
  • Registered or registry-eligible Respiratory Therapist (preferred)
  • NBRC Perinatal/Pediatric Specialty Exam passed (preferred)
  • CPFT, NRP, PALS and/or ACLS (preferred)
  • One year of supervisory experience (preferred)
  • Two years critical care, NICU/PICU RRT experience; knowledge and experience in basic floor care and mechanical ventilation, blood gas analysis, pulmonary function testing, bronchoscopy, capnography and oximetry equipment (required)
