This is a full time position working a mixed shift.


IRL is a full service provider for clinical laboratory and anatomic pathology services, providing hospitals, physicians, and clients with timely diagnostic information for patient care. Our infrastructure includes a fully automated esoteric core laboratory in Fort Lauderdale, a histology and microbiology operation in Largo, Florida and in Alachua Florida, and a network of hospital based rapid-response laboratories throughout Florida. Through the process of re-engineering and the application of leading edge automation technology, IRL has transformed laboratory operations into an integrated service network. As a Laboratory Assistant, you will perform any three of the following non-technical support functions in a hospital/clinical laboratory setting: collection, processing or submission and monitoring of specimens sent to referral laboratories for esoteric testing, patient registration. You will also perform duties consistent with written procedures and regulatory requirements and support the department in achieving department goals for service, quality, regulatory compliance, financial performance, patient satisfaction, healthy work environment and integration of intra and inter-departmental activities.


You Will Complete the Following for Specimen Collection:

  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of specimen collection and testing requirements as well as specimen rejection criteria
  • Demonstrate proficiency in venipunctures and/or fingersticks on pediatric, neonatal, adults and geriatric patients
  • Demonstrate proficiency in heelsticks on infants (as patient population requires)
  • Follow established procedures for patient identification and specimen collection based test orders
  • Complete appropriate specimen collection documentation
  • Educate patient and/or family regarding specimen collection procedures prior to obtaining specimen
  • Responsible for clerical duties (i.e., faxing, phones, pneumatic tube system, reports)
  • Review Outstanding Specimen Report (OSR) and pending specimen collections/accessioning issues; take action as appropriate

 You Will Complete the Following for Specimen Processing:


  • Receive laboratory specimens into the laboratory information system
  • Perform registration and order entry procedures, as requested, with accuracy, and in a timely manner
  • Label specimens and aliquots according to established protocols and according to testing ordered
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of specimen collection and testing requirements as well as specimen rejection criteria
  • Centrifuge and aliquot specimens appropriately, based on specimen type and tests ordered
  • Prepare specimens to be ready for courier pick-up and includes special instructions as requested by physician orders
  • Discard laboratory specimens according to established schedule
  • Perform periodic preventive maintenance and quality assurance procedures
  • Collect chain-of-custody drug collections according to establish policy (as laboratory may require)
  • Keep appropriate records/documentation relating to specimen problems and other problems encountered, take corrective action as necessary to ensure validity and accuracy of testing
You Will Complete the Following for Referral Testing Functions:
  • Assess specimen requirements for referral testing and troubleshoots any specimen requirement and/or referral testing specimen or order entry issues
  • Process, sort, and prepare specimens for submission to referral laboratories for testing in accordance with specimen requirements for tests ordered
  • Regularly monitor and review the status of referred testing to assure that results are received and made available to physicians within established turnaround times
  • Review Outstanding Specimen Report (OSR) and pending referral testing issues; takes action as appropriate
  • Communicate and troubleshoot any problem specimens in a timely manner



You Should Have:

  • A completed high school diploma or GED 
  • A vocational/technical diploma
  • A phlebotomy certificate is beneficial
Additional Information:
  • You should be available to work during disasters
  • This position serves as the preceptor for the purposes of training new non-technical personnel for the facility
  • The ability to frequently stand, bend, reach, squat, kneel, move and lift patients and/or equipment up to 50 pounds
