Founded in 1924, St. David’s Medical Center is a full-service medical center offering comprehensive medical care at three locations—St. David’s Medical Center, Heart Hospital of Austin and St. David’s Georgetown Hospital.
Located in central Austin, St. David’s Medical Center includes a 350-bed acute care hospital and a 64- bed rehabilitation hospital providing comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care. It is home to the internationally renowned Texas Cardiac Arrhythmia Institute and St. David’s Neuroscience & Spine Institute. The hospital provides a complete range of women’s services, including its acclaimed maternity unit, maternal-fetal medicine, a high-risk maternal and neonatal transport team, the region’s largest and most sophisticated Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and The Breast Center; complex surgical services; a comprehensive Bariatric Surgery Center; and a 24-hour emergency department.  

Our Labor and Delivery is a dynamic comprehensive unit with tenured staff, low turnover, and 90% of RN’s are certified in their specialty.  We are supported by our comprehensive Level IV NICU.  We are the only facility in Austin, Texas where mom and baby can stay together if her baby needs neonatal surgery at delivery.  Our unit has 22-beds, 3 OR’s and 4 bed PACU.  We provide the High Risk Maternal Transport Team for our division facilities as well as the Central Texas region.  Our comprehensive program cares for all types of maternal patients 20 weeks gestation thru 6 weeks post-partum. OB Hospitalists are on site 24/7 with CNM’s. Subspecialists are available for bedside consultation 24/7 including but not limited to MFM, Pulmonology, Cardiology, General Surgery, Neuro-Interventionalists/Neurosurgery, Nephrology, Intensivists, GI, Telepsychiatry, Psychiatry, Psychology. Services provided include but are not limited to:  evaluation of signs and symptoms of labor,  unstable antepartum conditions, preterm labor, pre-eclampsia, placenta previa spectrum, vasoprevia, induction of labor, labor and delivery, Cesarean Section-scheduled, non-scheduled and emergent. Cesarean Hysterectomy for abnormal placentation, cephalic version, iron infusion, PUBS/IUT, cerclage, post partum tubal ligation, post partum magnesium sulfate, extended care for postpartum pts with unstable co-morbidities. Critically ill maternal care is provided in L&D or ICU based on the patients specific needs.

Job Function

The St. David's HealthCare Registered Nurse (SDHRN) fulfills an important role as a central patient care provider responsible for the coordination and delivery of patient centered nursing care.  As a full partner of all the healthcare team, the SDHRN collaborates with all other healthcare disciplines to achieve successful execution of the patient's plan-of-care.  The SDHRN utilizes physical assessment skills and advanced diagnostic technology to aid in the assessment of the patient's nursing care needs.  Data collected is analyzed, synthesized and disseminated to other healthcare providers.  The SDHRN continues to monitor and assess the patient's physical condition, emotional and social needs, continually refining the plan-of-care to ensure achievement of the desired goals of the patient and facility outcomes.  Participates in providing patient specific care standards as directed, and follows service excellence standards to ensure high levels of patient satisfaction.   




Required: Graduation from an NLN school of professional nursing
Preferred: Completion of or actively pursuing a BSN degree



Preferred: Experience as a staff nurse in an acute care setting



Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Texas.

Current AHA BLS Course C or D provider.

ACLS provider within 6 months of hire. NRP provider, chapters 1-4, within 6 months of hire.

AWHONN EFM competency within 6 months of hire if L&D experience, within 1 yr of hire if no L&D experience.


If your compact license is from a state besides Texas, you will be required to obtain a TX Nursing License within 90 days after your start date.


Preferred:  Certification in area of specialty when eligible
