Welcome to the Colorado Blood Cancer Institute (CBCI) , a part of the Sarah Cannon at Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center. Our specially trained hematologists are committed to advancing science and care for patients with blood cancers such as leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. Having performed more than 3,000 transplants, CBCI is the largest and most experienced full-service blood and marrow (stem cell) transplant program in Colorado and among the top programs in the country. We are accredited by the Foundation for Accreditation of Cellular Therapies (FACT), the global standard for top quality patient care in cellular therapies. We work closely with our physician colleagues from New Mexico to Montana to provide patients with nationally recognized care and access to the most innovative clinical trials.

Summary of Key Responsibilities:
Performs medical laboratory related procedures for patients enrolled in clinical trials.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Process and ship pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamics and all other samples according to lab manual/instructions provided by study sponsor.
  • Prepare study supplies/source documents necessary for obtaining lab samples prior to patient treatment
  • Utilize electronic medical record (EMR) for source documentation
  • Maintain accurate freezer sample logs
  • Interface with hospital and clinic departments to ensure appropriate collection and preparation of study required biopsies.  Retrieve and prepare tumor biopsy samples as requested by study sponsor.
  • Maintain accurate records of sample acquisition and shipping.  All PK samples must have source documents available in patient charts that are accurate and complete.  All shipping and processing records should be maintained in the patient’s study binder.
  • Ensure lab kits and other supplies for all active studies are adequate, all supplies are in date and lab kit inventory is maintained and kept current.  Ensure all supplies are clearly labeled for study.
  • Unpack all supplies delivered daily
  • Schedule appropriate courier for sample shipments.  If too late for courier, be available to make arrangements to drop samples at FedEx, UPS, etc. if necessary.
  • Ensure there is an adequate supply of dry ice available for shipments.
  • Ability to respond to queries generated from study sponsor or contract lab regarding patient/sample data.
  • Check and respond to emails daily.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and workspace.  Ensure clear inventory and record keeping of samples stored on site.
  • Interface with hospital and clinic laboratory colleagues regarding labs for research patients.
  • Attain and maintain competency to perform moderately complex processing of research specimens
  • Interface with Clinical Research Coordinators and Research Nurses to ensure that all research patients have correct lab kits prior to patients’ visits.
  • Open to working flexible hours including evenings and weekends

Qualifications

Knowledge:
  • OSHA requirements for safe handling of blood and body fluids
  • IATA Training and Certification
  • Sarah Cannon organizational policies, standard operating procedures and systems
  • Clinical research processes
Skills:
  • Computer skills
  • Verbal and written communication
  • Gathering and reporting information
  • Blood processing
Abilities:
  • Multi-task in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision
  • Communicate and work effectively with a diverse team of professionals
Education:
High school diploma required
Vocational/Technical School preferred

Experience:
At least one year of clinical laboratory processing experience
