POSITION SUMMARY
The Surgical Technologist is responsible for providing assistance to surgeons, registered nurses and other specialists in caring for patients with minor to major illnesses or injuries.  He/she functions under the direction of the licensed registered nurse.  Will also be required to function and cross train to the Endoscopy department with all the skill requirements.  Accepts shift work and takes call as required by the department.  Works with patients ranging in life span from infant to geriatric.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assists in delivery of age appropriate patient care in the operating room and other procedural areas.
  • Assembles and prepares sterile setup of supplies and instruments used for surgical procedures.
  • Anticipates surgeon’s needs during surgery based on knowledge of surgical procedures.
  • Passes instruments and supplies to the surgeon and surgical assistant.
  • Ability to perform scrub role in two or more OR specialty services as assigned.
  • Assists with room turnover to ensure timely, efficient use of OR time.
  • Assists to help prepare for the next day’s surgical cases by pulling case carts and updating   preference cards.
  • Responsible for restocking unused sterile supplies and equipment, recognizing appropriate integrity of sterile packaging and handling.
  • Acts a resource for surgeons, pct’s, attendants and other departments.
  • Assists in maintaining a clean, orderly and safe environment.
  • Handles sponges and sharps appropriately to protect the patient and entire surgical team as well as providing accurate count and reconciliation of sponges and sharps.
  • Responsible for strict maintenance of surgical sterile field.
  • Participates in unit activities
  • Participates in budget and inventory control.
  • Keeps supervisor and or supply clerk informed of needed items.
  • Participate in staff and self-development and is responsible for maintenance of certification requirements.
  • Takes appropriate safety precautions to prevent/manage accidents in the area.
  • Requirement to perform duties related to disinfection and sterilization of instruments.
  • Participates in performance/process improvement.
  • Assists with orientation of new employees.
  • Completes annual competency requirements.
  • Attends 80% of staff meetings.
  • Attends 90% of Mandatory Education meetings and in-services.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Required: Graduation from a surgical tech program or related experience in the field. Certification as a Surgical Tech. A minimum of three (3) years recent experience as a Surgical Technologist with demonstrated competency in multiple inpatient surgical specialties.

 

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required:        Surgical Tech Certification. Current certification as BCLS Healthcare Provider.

 

Preferred:        ACLS.

Reports to:      Charge Nurse/ Perioperative Services Director
