TriStar Hendersonville Medical Center, a 159-bed hospital about 15 minutes outside of Nashville, has provided high-quality health care to residents of Sumner and surrounding counties for over 40 years. The facility is the first Accredited Chest Pain Center in Sumner County and is a Certified Primary Stroke Center. The Birth Center at TriStar Hendersonville, featuring Sumner County’s only Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), hosts spacious LDRP suites and a lactation boutique for inpatient and outpatient services. In addition to its main hospital campus, other affiliates include TriStar Women’s Imaging Hendersonville, The Outpatient Center at Hendersonville, TriStar Portland ER and TriStar Portland Diagnostic Center.

TriStar Hendersonville Medical Center is looking for a First Assistant.


  • Assists in preparing the operating room and performs assigned support duties during surgical procedures.
  • Ensures all instruments function properly prior to usage, displaying knowledge of instrument and content of set.
  • Assists the RN in prioritizing implementation of physician’s orders according to the patient’s needs.
  • Performs weekly and monthly specialty assignment.
  • Assists in procuring instrumentation in accordance with surgeon’s preference card, knowledge of the procedure, in consideration of the anatomy involved.  Anticipates the needs of patients and procures instrumentation according to those needs.
  • Assists team members in selecting and preparing routine supplies, instruments and equipment for the surgical procedure according to the procedural card.
  • Readies all positioning devices deemed necessary by procedure, surgeon preference and patient pre-operative assessment.
  • Identifies and transports patients as needed assists with shaving the operative site when indicated.  Secures all necessary x-rays when appropriate.
  • Assists the scrub nurse to maintain an accurate account of sponges, sharps, and instruments according to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Assures that the procedure information is documented on the procedural cards for future reference according to policy and procedure.  Documents patient positioning, required supplies, equipment and instruments to maintain current doctor's preference card
  • Regularly assists in the orientation and training of other personnel.
  • Sets up instrument stand with drapes, sutures, power tools, and other instruments in accordance with the operating surgeon’s Preference Card.
  • Opens drape pack, following basic aseptic technique.  Assist first Assistant or surgeon in draping patient to establish the sterile field in accordance with AORN Standards and Recommended Practices for Perioperative Nursing.

  • Surgical Certification from accredited First Assist accreditation body
  • BLS Certification
