HCA’s Care Transformation and Innovation (CT&I) team delivers a step change in that direction through clinically led integration of digital and AI technologies into care. The AVP of Machine Learning Engineering will play a critical role in helping us achieve this goal by developing innovative products that leverage data science to improve patient outcomes. He/She will be responsible for designing, building, scaling, and maintaining foundational AI models, algorithms, and machine learning platform capabilities to host the end-to-end lifecycle of data science products. As an engineering leader in HCA’s Care Transformation and Innovation team, this role drives all the technical aspects from incubation through the Minimum Lovable Product stage in a cross-functional environment. He/She will also work closely with IT and Security teams, data scientists, business stakeholders, care providers, and academic and industry partners to enable agile development of machine learning solutions that leverage large volumes of internal and external data. Up to 25% travel required.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Oversee and mentor a team of machine learning engineers, cloud engineers and data scientists.
• Build self-service tools and reference architectures for common patterns in MLOps and DataOps.
• Evaluate, benchmark, and optimize machine learning models for accuracy and efficiency.
• Develop production-grade ML models and expert systems that seamlessly integrate into enterprise systems and operational workflows.
• Provide thought leadership on build-vs-buy decisions and model KPI trade-offs.
• Partner with IT and compliance teams to implement privacy, security, ethical, and other regulatory controls while maintaining lean MLOps practices.
• Seek continuous improvement in DORA metrics through feedback and automation.
• Conduct architecture, design, and code reviews with the team to ensure the reliability, observability,
interpretability, explainability and scalability of data science products.
• Stay current with the latest developments in healthcare AI and ML engineering.
• Work with directors and program managers to develop and maintain project plans, budgets, and timelines.
• Communicate with senior management and stakeholders to ensure alignment of goals and priorities. Develop and track engineering OKRs.

• Assist in hiring, training, and developing machine learning engineers.
• Ensure the team follows best practices in cloud architecture, machine learning, and data engineering.
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
• Bachelor Degree Preferred
• Master Degree Preferred
• 10+ years of full-stack experience in building and scaling data/digital products.
• 3+ years of experience in managing and mentoring a team of data scientists and
machine learning engineers.
• 5+ years of experience in building and deploying AI/ML solutions in production.
• Expert in using MLOps platforms such as GCP VertexAI or AWS Sagemaker in agile
model delivery and operations.
• Experience in building and operationalizing multi-modal Computer Vision and NLP
solutions using large temporal datasets and seamless human-in-the-loop integration.
• Experience in data de-identification techniques, synthetic data generation and handing
of PHI, PII data with robust governance.
• Prior programming experience in Python, Java, or Infrastructure-as-Code.
• Experience with machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or scikitlearn.
• Proficiency in statistics and data science.
• Experience with SQL, NoSQL databases, and distributed computing.
• Strong communication skills and ability to present complex technical concepts to nontechnical
stakeholders.
