POSITION SUMMARY:
Performs testing without supervision for the pre-analytical, analytical, post-analytical testing of waived, moderately complex and complex departments according to established standards of accreditation set forth by TJC, CLIA and C.A.P. The Laboratory Supervisor may be responsible for one or more departments in the Laboratory (Microbiology, Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry and Blood Bank). The Laboratory Supervisor performs testing of body fluids aiding in the diagnoses, evaluation and the treatment of patients. He/she must maintain the highest standards of all accrediting agencies. Performs related quality control and clerical work as required. Evaluates new procedures or methods under direct supervision of the Laboratory Director and Laboratory Manager. Assists in training and orientation of personnel. Must be accessible to testing personnel at all times testing is performed to provide on-site telephone or electronic consultation in order to resolve technical problems in accordance with policies and procedures of the Laboratory.
POPULATION SERVED:
Clinical Laboratory services performed on patients from Neonate to Geriatric ages.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
A. Laboratory Supervisors Responsibility (General Supervisors responsibility - CMS)
B. Directs lab section staff in the performance of their duties.
C. Oversees the technical aspects of the Laboratory.
D. Performs clinical laboratory assays in one or more of the technical disciplines
E. Ensures timely availability of laboratory results
F. Ensures the quality of analyses through quality control, quality assurance, and maintenance activity.
G. Participates in training and educational activities for the laboratory.
H. Assumes responsibility for ensuring that various functions are performed during the work period.
I. Infection Control, Safety and Accrediting Agencies
J. Performs testing without supervision for the pre-analytical, analytical, post-analytical testing of waived, moderately complex and high-complex testing according to established standards of accreditation set forth by TJC, CLIA and C.A.P. K. Performs other related duties as directed or required.
REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATIONS
Current BLS certification required if scheduled to work at offsite FSED.
REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
A Bachelor’s Degree or higher level of education with education from an accredited program in Medical Laboratory Sciences. Work experience in lieu of Degree only for internal candidates. A high degree of knowledge/experience in medical laboratory technology and laboratory accrediting agency standards is required.
Two years of laboratory training or experience, or both, in high complexity testing. Full knowledge of the medical laboratory area is required.
PREFERRED EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
Certified as a MT, MLS or CLS from any licensure recognized by the laboratory certification agency (e.g. CLIA, CMS, TJC, C.A.P.) Preferred 2-3 years of leadership experience in a clinical laboratory environment. Ability to navigate through Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES
Ability to relate professionally with people, analytical abilities, ability to problem solve, train employees and to motivate others. Organizational skills, research skills, time management skills, written and verbal communications and supervisory skills required. Excellent customer service skills required. Ability to navigate through Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
