Job Summary and Qualifications

Under supervision of the Infection Prevention Manager, coordinates surveillance and Infection Prevention activities that reduce the risk of endemic and epidemic nosocomial infections in patients, visitors and health care workers. Coordinates and develops training and education programs for staff and other hospital professionals using cost effective and epidemiological sound surveillance, prevention and control methods. Participates in professional and community organizations, which impact the control of transmission of infections in Austin and surrounding communities. Participates in total quality management activities that support the organization.

• Conducts surveillance, epidemiological studies and investigations under the supervision of the Director of Infection Prevention
• Conducts surveillance through systematic case finding and data collection
• Enters data into computer
• Assists in interpretation of data
• Utilizes data to assist in the planning of interventions specific to the individual needs of the unit being served.
• Collaborates system-wide with all disciplines and departments.
• Participates in the Infection Prevention Committee and in quality initiatives of the health care system.
• Serves as consultant, teacher and resource person in infection prevention and control issues

Experience

• 1-3 years of experience of hospital based clinical experience
• Experience in Infection Prevention and Control including use of analytical, computer, teaching and research skills preferred

Education

• Associates Degree in Nursing 
• Bachelors of Science in Nursing – preferred

Licensees and Certifications

• Certification in Infection Control (CIC) required within 2 years of hire
• Registered Nurse license in Texas. If Compact License, Texas license must be obtained within 90 days of hire
• Certification by the Board of Infection Control (CBIC) – preferred

This 300+ bed facility features a 24-hour emergency department, the region’s largest Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and the internationally-renowned Texas Cardiac Arrhythmia Institute and St. David’s Neuroscience & Spine Institute. The full scope of services provided at St. David’s Medical Center includes cancer care, heart and vascular care, imaging services, joint replacement and orthopedics, women’s services, complex surgical services, and a Bariatric Surgery Center. The facility is home to a 60+ bed rehabilitation hospital providing both inpatient and outpatient comprehensive care.
