Job Summary and Qualifications

JOB SUMMARY

The Senior DevOps Engineer is a technical leadership position without direct reports. The position will provide technical expertise in the area of infrastructure, platforms, and operations for HealthTrust DevOps operations. The role will lead the discovery, design, and architecture of solutions for building and maintaining infrastructure and platforms to support the Healthtrust mission. The Senior Engineer is expected to have a working understanding of all infrastructure domains and platform domains related to DevOps platforms. This position must be able to deal with complex business requirements and turn them into attainable specifications and architectures.

The Senior DevOps Engineer is expected to be an expert in two or more IT areas (e.g. network, virtualization, operating system operations, cloud solutions, etc.) and be able to operate with little day-to-day supervision.

The Senior DevOps Engineer will collaborate with others, including HCA’s Corporate engineers and HealthTrust’s Enterprise Architects on various projects. The Senior Engineer will play a prominent role early in projects to ensure that infrastructure and platform concerns are addressed throughout the lifecycle. This position is also expected to provide general oversight for operational work performed by DevOps to ensure effective results.

Workload will consist of ~60% project based work and ~30% operational work with 10% for learning and professional growth.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Senior DevOps Engineer will have the following job responsibilities:

  • Provide technical expertise on projects and initiatives throughout HealthTrust with a focus on DevOps infrastructure and platforms.
  • Collaborate with HCA Architects and Engineers to ensure that HealthTrust is in alignment with HCA’s technical direction and priorities. Leverage HCA’s knowledge to solve problems that HCA has already figured out. Leverage HCA’s scale to use its existing technologies whenever possible.
  • Work closely with various HTTI leaders and interface on a regular basis with technical and non-technical members of the organization. Communicate potentially complex technical designs or issues so that everyone understands.
  • Actively lean-in and participate in building, configuring, and maintaining technical systems and platforms owned by the DevOps department. Example, GitHub, Azure DevOps, Docker (containerization in general), GCP and Azure support, and helping sunset legacy systems such as Octopus, TeamCity and Jenkins.
  • Provide internal leadership in infrastructure, platforms, and operations. Speak for and make decisions for the department at meetings with business and ITG leaders.
  • Mentor junior staff and engineers in infrastructure, platforms, and operations best practices.
  • Develops best practices for operations of infrastructure and platforms, with a specific focus on high availability and recoverability.
  • Develops specifications and implementation requirements for new platforms. Works with implementation engineers to guide implementation.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s Degree Preferred

To fulfill the responsibilities of the position, the Senior DevOps Engineer should have the following:

Infrastructure & Platform Related:

  • Expert knowledge of core infrastructure, including networking, hardware, virtualization, and operating system concepts
  • Expert knowledge of one or more specific technology platforms utilized by DevOps practices
  • Advanced knowledge of requirements for deploying and running in-house-developed applications
  • Ability to develop and drive integration of requirements for new technologies and systems
  • Ability to perform architectural assessments and develop architectural designs that are resilient and provide highly available systems
  • Ability to understand and inform integration points between disparate systems for issue resolution
  • Proactively evolve the infrastructure and platform capabilities needed to reduce risk and protect the company
  • Knowledge of and experience with various aspects of infrastructure operations
  • Able to see and understand:
    • The business needs that drive infrastructure investment
    • The big picture without being caught up in diversionary details
    • Patterns or connections between situations that are not obviously related
    • Key underlying issues in complex situations
  • Demonstrated record as a strong, collaborative technical leader with the ability to think analytically and creatively to solve complex problems.
  • Functional knowledge of programming and software development
  • Strong critical thinking skills, strong conflict management skills, excellent multi-tasking, prioritization, and time management skills, and good Executive Presence

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Normal work environment consists of a cube with a laptop for office requirements and WFH kit for remote work
  • Position may require periodic after hours work.
  • Position is based in Nashville office with option for working from home schedule
  • Onsite meetings may be required as communication and planning demands dictate
